Full Description

Whisky distillery, in use, depicted on the 1st edition OS map. The distillery was found in 1824 by Robert Bain and Andrew Peary. By the 1900s, it was on of the largest producers in Scotland using triple distillation and producing around 1 million litres of whisky per year. It was purchased by Hiram Walker, a Canadian distiller, in 1936. Between 1967 and 1981, the distillery also produced the Mosstowie single malt, using a pair of Lomond stills. Production had increased to 5 million litres of whisky per year by the mid 1970s. At one time part of the Allied Distiller's Caledonian Malts range, the distillery was taken over by Chivas Brothers in 2005 with bottlings are made by Gordon and Macphail. A photographic survey of the 1960s warehouse was carried out by AOC Archaeology in 2023 ahead of proposed development.
