Full Description

A possible burial cist that had been disturbed by ploughing was reported to the Archaeology Service in March 2007, who contacted Historic Scotland under the human remains call-out procedure. AOC was commissioned by Historic Scotland to undertake the excavation of a single, isolated cist, identified during ploughing. The partially complete cist was composed of edge set rounded stones (possibly from as far afield as Keith or Cullen) on the north and east sides, placed within a construction cut 1.80 m east to west by 1.10 north to south. The floor of the cist was lined with a set of water rounded cobbles on which a single crouched inhumation was placed on its left side, with the head at the west facing south. Numerous fragments of a beaker and a plano-convex knife were recovered from the cist. The skeletal remains indicate that they belonged to a female aged 17-25 years. The beaker falls within Needham's category of S-profiled beakers with a likely date of circa 2300-200BC. Decoration is in bands of comb-impressed designs, interspersed with plain zones, running from just below the rim to immediately above the base. Four further trenches and 52 test pits were subsequently excavated in the field by AOC, but these revealed no other finds or features of archaeological significance.
