Full Description

An archaeological watching brief carried out by Guard Archaeology in 2014 during groundworks for construction of a warehouse and associated infrastructure recorded a number of discrete archaeological features along the hillside. A total of seven areas of archaeological potential were uncovered, up-slope on the western side of the development area: the east side had been subject to extensive prior disturbance. Three proved to be archaeological features. A large area of organic and charcoal rich spreads at the northwest periphery of the site. The charcoal spreads had no distinct form and it was not clear whether they originate from human activity further up-slope out with the development area, or if an accumulation of organic material has resulted through natural soil processes. Three post holes were recorded in the southwest corner of the site but no dateable material was recovered. An arc of large pits was recorded within the central area, the largest 3.4m in diameter and of maximum depth 0.55m, the others 2.15m, 2.6m and 2.75m in diameter. They had charcoal rich lower fills but no dating evidence was recovered
