Full Description

Remains of a World War II airfield, also known as Bogs of Mayne. Completed by the Royal Engineers in June 1940, the airfield was laid out between the River Lossie and the B9010 road. A perimeter track was laid parallel to the river, along with 18 hard standings. Two hangars stood at the southwest corner of the airfield and a bomb store which stood at the southern end of the main runway. There were 15 associated building sites scattered around the surrounding fields to the west, although the farms Wester and Easter Manbeen were left intact amongst the buildings. Blenheims and Lysanders used the airfield in 1940. These were followed by squadrons of Hurricanes, Wellingtons and Ansons. The airfield was used to store surplus aircraft from 1945 and was closed in 1947. A number of crash sites surround the airfield, including the following: 8 May 1942, Wellington 28852 crashed while overshooting the runway killing one crew member; 20 July 1942, Wellington HT867 crashed on airfield buildings killing the pilot; 6 August 1942, Wellington R1480 crashed near D Fit dispersal after its Port wing caught fire causing the structure to collapse and killing all but one crew member. The runways no longer survive but several buildings still stand, in varying states, including the original decontamination centre lying amongst trees. The waterworks, dam and underground pumping station still survive. The eastern perimeter road and hard standings were still intact in the 1970s but most had gone by the 1990s. It was used as a training base by No. 20 OTU (Operational Training Unit). A photographic survey was carried out in 2015 at Forbes Lodge Joiners Workshop prior to proposed redevelopment. A photographic survey was carried out in 2016 at Wester Manbeen farm prior to a proposed new dairy and cattle court.
