Full Description

New Spynie Kirk. Built in 1735-6, it is a simple T-plan kirk, with a long South facing 4-bay elevation. It is constructed from rubble, and has contrasting painted ashlar dressings, some of which are re-used from the former church to the East (NJ26NW0031). There is a substantial pointed-headed entrance at the South-West (left), with moulded re-used jambs. There is a smaller, square-headed doorway at the South-East (right), with deeply moulded re-used jambs placed upside-down, with the run-off stops pointing upwards and sited close to the lintel instead of at the base by the kerb. A small window above the entrance has deeply chamfered margins cutting through an obscure dated cill. There is a small centre mural sundial, dated 1740, in the South wall. A blocked centre Minister's door is flanked by enlarged windows, and there is a later enlarged round-headed North gallery window, 4- and multi-pane glazing is used. There is a blocked T-wing door. There is a bellcote at the West gable apex dated 1723 (date of construction), and 1735 (date of removal to New Spynie) containing a Michael Burgerhuys bell, dated 1637. There are slate roofs. The interior is T-plan, with the original layout and a vaulted plaster ceiling. There are raised and fielded panelled galleries at the East and West, and a demi-octagonal raised and fielded panelled pulpit in the centre of the South wall with a reeded pilastered backboard and corniced tester. There are simple grained board pews, including some of the 'box pew' type. The church is enclosed by a simple rubble wall with two entrances, one from the road to the South and one from the East, both are flanked by plain gatepiers.
