Full Description

Approximate location of aircraft crash site. On 20th May 1945, Wellington NC594 of 20 OTU took of on test flight. At around 300ft, it suffered a complete engine failure and, despite the pilot's efforts to turn it out to sea, it crashed into a block of council houses on Church Street, Seatown, on the East side of Lossiemouth. Sadly, the three aircrew, and eight civilians (all from one property - six members of the Flood family, and two members of the Allen family) died in the event. A memorial plaque dedicated to those who lost their lives was unveiled on VJ Day 1995, adjacent to the house and facing Market Green. It is reported that on its previous sortie, this aircraft had made an emergency landing with port engine trouble. After several ground runs, no fault could be found so the aircraft was scheduled for a test flight, resulting in the above tragedy. The plaques reads: 'NEAR THIS SITE ON 20 MAY 1945 8 CIVILIANS AND 3 AIRCREW LOST THEIR LIVES THIS PLAQUE IS ERECTED TO THEIR MEMORY AND TO THE MEMORY OF ALL OTHER CIVILIANS AND SERVICEMEN WHO WERE KILLED IN LOSSIEMOUTH DURING WORLD WAR II - ERECTED BY THE COMMUNITY OF LOSSIEMOUTH 20 AUGUST 1995'.
