A trial trenching evaluation was carried out by AOC Archaeology in April 2023 ahead of proposed housing development (Western Village Phase 3). The area for investigation within the development area was limited by various constraints, including a gas main, ongoing construction in the north, spoil heaps and an ecological buffer. was in part delimited by a gas main across the development site, construction and an ecological buffer. A total of 60 trenches were excavated, of which only six revealed archaeological features, including an animal burial (horse), a Z-plan animal enclosure, charcoal rich pits, refuse pits and ditches. The charcoal rich pits were probably related to deposition of burnt wood in between periods of activity where windblown sands were also deposited. Two of the ditches form a sub-rectangular enclosure, but given the constraints to the excavation it was not possible to ascertain its function. It was noted that it bore similarities to a barrow. A palaeochannel was identified in three trenches on the east side of the site. The features were further investigated in November 2023 (NJ26SW0833).
