Full Description
Planned village established in the early 19th century. In 1805 a group of eight landowners bought the old fishing village from Sir Archibald Dunbar to lay out a regular town with a port at the west end. In 1818 William Young became the sole owner and developed the town into Moray's principal herring stations and a major exporter of grain. The first new church was built in the 1820s and three more had been added by the end of the century.
