Full Description
Planned village and historic core of Hopeman. The village was established by William Young in 1805 on land purchased from the Inverugie Estate, and originally named Newtown of Hopeman. Between 1806 and 1812 almost 70 building plots were taken by fishermen, tradesmen, masons and quarrymen working in the nearby freestone quarries, although many of the plots were not developed until the early 20th century. Young also constructed a small harbour (NJ16NW0043) which was in use by some 70 fishing boats by 1850.
