Full Description
A watching brief in 2013 during groundworks for a new nursery at East End School recorded two prehistoric features and some medieval pottery. The site lies within the former medieval burgh of Elgin, and in the vicinity of the medieval hospital of Maison Dieu (NJ26SW0012). The prehistoric features comprised a hearth from which was recovered a thumbnail-decorated rim of a pot, and a pit. Samples from the features gave radiocarbon dates in the Neolithic period.

Radiocarbon samples from 2013 WB: SUERC-49940 from charred hazlenut, 4700 +/- 32 BP, 3631-3372 cam BC (Oxcal 4.2 run 22/04/14); SUERC-49941 from charred hazlenut 4657 +/- 32 BP, 3520-3363 BC (OxCal 4.2 run 22/04/14).
