Full Description

An evaluation carried out by AOC Archaeology in February 2013 in advance of Phase 1 of a business park uncovered only a single large pit of indeterminate date. In total, 47 trenches were excavated (circa 4.3 percent of the available area of the site). The single archaeological feature identified, a pit 1.95 m in diameter and 0.6 m deep, contained no finds, but may represent a short phase of prehistoric activity. Across the site a system of field drains was visible, running southeast-northwest across the north slope towards the low ground around the A96. The drain tracks had been excavated down to the subsoil. No archaeological features or artefacts were recorded in the remaining trenches. An evaluation was carried out in May 2022 by AOC Archaeology, as a remedial phase of works centred around NJ 2447 6160 in the southwest of the development area, comprising the excavation of one trench and five test pits (approximately 4 percent of the available area), and a metal detecting survey covering the extents of the area. No evidence of archaeological features were identified and the majority of the metal detecting objects found were remnants of modern farming practice and railway maintenance. The ground had been largely disturbed with built up layers of redeposited natural and industrial waste, likely associated with the construction and maintenance of the nearby railway.
