Full Description
A watching brief was undertaken by Alba Arcaheology (Highland) Ltd over the excavation of 13 trial pits as part of the Elgin Flood Alleviation Scheme investigations in 2007. Despite a number of cropmarks having been recorded in this area, no finds or features of archaeological significance were encountered. An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by AOC Archaeology Group in advance of the proposed Elgin Flood Alleviation Scheme in 2011. The evaluation trenching was designed to determine the presence and/or nature of the cropmarks identified from aerial photographs. Evidence for remnant rig and furrow was encountered, but the Kirkhill cropmark (NJ26SW0180) was found to coincide with a change in subsoil. In addition, a discrete possible posthole and a large linear feature, the latter of likely natural origin, were recorded.
