Full Description

A watching brief was carried out by Alba Archaeology (Highland) Ltd over the excavation of 40 trial pits as part of the Elgin Flood Alleviation Scheme. A large amount of 19th/20th century debris was encountered in a number of the trial pits. In particular ED2TP02 and EC2TP01-02 had notably more material than any of the other trial pits, in the form of ceramics, glass, metal, which had survived as well preserved large fragments. Several complete glass bottles were recovered, many still corked, including a bottle marked 'Symington and Co. Edinburgh Coffee and Chicory' which provided an approximate date range for the material of late 1800s to early/mid 1900s. It is has been suggested that this area was formerly used a rubbish dump, however strip allotments were observed across the west end of this site on a photograph dating to 1946 (NJ26SW0229). Material became less abundant and more modern towards the east.
