Trial trenching was carried out by SUAT in April 1989 ahead of proposed development, on a site with the Medieval Royal Burgh (NJ26SW0158) and possibly within the boundary of the Franciscan Priory (NJ26SW0008).

Trial trenching was carried out by SUAT in April 1989 ahead of proposed development, on a site with the Medieval Royal Burgh (NJ26SW0158) and possibly within the boundary of the Franciscan Priory (NJ26SW0008). Four small trenches were excavated. These demonstrated variations in thickness of the post-medieval garden soil overlying the natural, thickest in Trench A in the northwest of the site, and with very little in Trench C on the east of the site (possibly a result of levelling activities). A number of cut features (including pits) indicate considerable activity on the site although most could not be dated; they likely include medieval and post-medieval features. The lack of pottery and architectural remains indicate that this area was not the main centre of the friary but could have been within the precincts. Artefacts recovered include sherds of medieval and post medieval pottery and 19th century bottle glass. Another three trenches were excavated to the west in May 1989 (see NJ26SW0008).
