Full Description
Site of tolbooth which stood west of the church at the approximate location of the present fountain. the tolbooth functioned as the town gaol and a collection point for market tolls, dues and customs. The early version of this building (16th century) was probably built of timber and thatch. In the early 17th century this was replaced in stone. A sketch in Rhind's Walks in Moray shows a tolbooth built in the form of a keep to which a council chamber was subsequently added. This survived until it was damaged by fire in 1702. A third tolbooth was completed in 1716, this comprising a 5-storey tower with adjoining rooms to the west. The site was cleared in 1843. Excavations in 1995 in response to environmental improvements located the wall foundations of the 18th century tolbooth.
