Full Description

Site of the Medieval village of Spynie, created a Burgh of Barony in 1451 and a burgh of regaility in 1452. It was a seaport until circa 1500 but changes in the coastline cut off the sea and left it on the edge of Spynie Loch. It appears to have died out about end of the 17th century. Cooke writing in 1800 recorded that nothing then remained of it except the market cross, but suggested that this might refer to the alleged cathedral cross (see NJ26NW0031). See NJ26NW0032 for artefacts found in this area.
