Full Description
Evaluation within Cemetery Field carried out by CFA in September 1995 included trial trenching and geophysical survey east of the site of the Bishop's Palace /castle (see also NJ26NW0001). A total of 12 trenches were excavated to the north, east and south of the cemetery (NJ26NW0026). To the north and east of the cemetery trenches indicated traces of a substantial hexagonal structure; large walls and ditches were located in three trenches (F, G and I), the features covered with substantial amounts of silt which contained animal bones and medieval pottery. Resistivity survey was undertaken over the site of Kinnedar Castle in the vicinity of the excavated trenches. To the south of the cemetery the trenching recorded pits, possible post-holes, dump deposits, drainage ditches, agricultural features and animal burials. The recovered artefacts indicate that many of these features are modern. The evaluation supports the documentary evidence that a hexagonally-shaped structure is the remains of Kinneddar Castle/Bishop's Palace, and also the documentation for levelling of the field. See also NJ26NW0069 for further evaluation in 2002, and NJ26NW0103 for programme of investigation 2015-2016, and NJ26NW0044 for cropmark features.
