Full Description
A watching brief was carried out by Stuart Farrell in October 2021 on ground investigation trial pits ahead of the construction of the Moray Aerospace, Advanced Technology and Innovation Campus (MAATIC). Fourteen test pits and eight soakaway pits were dug and metal detected, with the excavations revealing no archaeological features or deposits. A metal detecting survey was also undertaken of an area 3 m x 6 m, with no finds reported. Trial trenching evaluation and metal detecting survey was carried out by AOC Archaeology in November-December 2021. Forty-three trenches were excavated, and eleven post-holes, six pits and four gullies were uncovered in the northeast corner of the site, although only some of the features could be excavated. A deposit containing slag, and some of the postholes, may have been associated with the smithy depicted on the OS 1st edition map (NJ26NW0076). The metal detecting survey recovered 20 artefacts including fragments of farming implements, a horseshoe fragment, a small hollow cylindrical object, iron nails and bolts. Topsoil finds comprised post-medieval ceramic and glass sherds, and a small stone ball.
