Full Description
Memorial unveiled and dedicated on 23rd August 2015 commemorating the wartime Shetland Bus rescue mission which operated from Burghead. In 1942 and 1943 Burghead was used as a clandestine base to transport agents and supplies to Norway, and to help individuals escape from German occupation. In 1943 one boat Burghead was struck by enemy fire and eight Norwegian men were killed. A propeller from the vessel is affixed to the memorial. The inscription reads REMEMBERING THE MEN OF THE BURGHEAD BASE OF THE SHETLAND BUS WHO DIED IN ITS SERVICE, and lists the individuals who died. A second plaque records the donations.
