Full Description
Site of a flood gate shown on the 1873 1st edition OS map, forming part of the Spynie Canal complex (see (NJ26NE0047). A channel runs from the floodgate northeast to the sea, and to the southwest of the gate the map shows a line of air shafts running to a sluice at NJ 26201 68602. Site visit in 2022 during Moray Community Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (CCZAS). The site of the flood gate is now in the intertidal zone. The airshafts mark the course of a tunnel or culvert routing the canal across the mobile dunes and beach: an alignment of deep holes show where the tunnel collapsed but no masonry structure was observed. See also NJ26NE0047.
