Full Description

Remains of a farmstead and mill that is depicted on the OS 1st edition map, shown as a mill pond with sluice and a lade to the west running down to the steading buildings set around a central courtyard with another rectangular building to the southeast. The farm buildings were associated with the large country house of Birchfield/Glen of Rothes House (NJ25SE0047) to the north. By the time of the 2nd edition map the farmstead buildings are no longer shown, the lade, mill pond/dam are shown, with the pond/dam retained as an ornamental landscape feature following the redevelopment of Birchfield House into Glen of Rothes House. Remains of the lade were recorded during a walkover survey by Highland Archaeology Services in November 2021 (NJ25SE0065), measuring around 4 m in width to the northeast of the Burn of Whiterashes farmstead remains (NJ25SW0010).
