Full Description
Medieval corn drying kiln exposed in an old quarry edge, initially recorded in 2004. The feature was investigated in June 2008 to assess its survival, established that erosion had only slightly damaged one edge. The kiln, which had been destroyed by fire, comprised a stone lined bowl 2.4m in diamere and a stone-lined flue 2.2m long and 1.4m wide. The site was threatened by rabbit activity and further excavation was carried out in April-May 2009. This uncovered considerable quantities of the carbonised superstructure which had collapsed into the bowl. Work on the corn drying kiln was completed in 2011. Excavation of the charred timbers revealed structural relationships between them, a number of pegged joints and the remains of the kiln mat. The stone-built bowl of the kiln had a carefully-laid floor. The first part of the flue, where the fire was set, had a clay-lined base, with a less well-built passage leading to it.
