Full Description

Site of earthworks, depicted on the OS 1st edition map as a Camp (Remains of) and on the 2nd edition map as a Camp (Site of). The OS Name Book (1871) states that remains of rectangular trenches said to be a Roman camp but almost erased by cultivation were noted in this area. Two pieces of pot, possibly Italo-Greek are said to have been found but there is now some doubt about this. Now no trace of earthwork as the site is the quarried south flank of a sandy hillock. Trenching in 1988 (Daniels) failed to locate the north side of the earthwork. , in 1990 a V-shaped ditch with well defined shovel slot was found to continue on the north side, but this eventually petered out due to effects of wind erosion. There was clear evidence of turf lining on inner face. No artefacts were found.
