Full Description

Site of bobbin mills depicted on the OS 1st edition map which shows one large building with two smaller structures on the east. By the time of the 2nd edition the smaller structures appear to have been removed, and two larger buildings added to the site which is now annotated as a saw mill and timber yard. Documentary research by J. Gilliatt records that the bobbin mill was established, with a sawmill, in about 1866 close to the railway station. The mill occupied a wooden building, and was powered by steam, making bobbins from birch wood. In 1871 the bobbin maker master was Andrew Taylor. The bobbin mill had gone out of business by 1886 although it continued in use as a sawmill.
