Full Description

A trial trenching evaluation was carried out by Highland Archaeology Services in May - June 2016 ahead of proposed development. A total of 46 trenches were excavated. Archaeological features were uncovered in a number of features in the north-western area of the site, including pits, postholes, stakeholes, possible small kilns or corn driers. An open-area excavation of this north-western area was subsequently carried out by Highland Archaeology Service in June-October 2016. A number of features were recorded, including a total of eight kilns and two structures. Neither the kilns nor structures are of a type that is easily dateable, but are typical of those found in rural Scotland from the 6th to the 18th century. Other features include a total of 97 postholes and 158 pits. No posthole alignments were identified during fieldwork, however this will be reviewed post-excavation. No dating material was recovered from the pits. Two pieces of prehistoric flint were recovered, probably representing background prehistoric activity, and a single fragment of ceramic material was recovered, probably the base of a medieval bowl, from the fill of one of the kilns.
