Full Description

Site of a cist with a symbol stone (NJ16SW0168) built into the west side discovered during ploughing in 1894. It was subsequently excavated by Mr Dawson, tenant of Easterton, and Rev McEwan of Dyke. The cist was aligned north-south, internally 4 ft 2 in (1.27 m) long, composed of rough slabs one of which (on the east) was over 3 ft (0.91 m) high and 2 ft (0.61 m) broad. Paved with small stones, 4-6 in (circa 10-15 cm). No cover slab was found by a large stone had been removed from the location a year or two prior to discovery. Evidence of bodies at both ends, plus two spots of black ashes. Also 10-12 white beach pebbles, and two pebbles with marks of usage. A rough axe of granite or quartz was found beneath the Symbol Stone slab when lifted.
