Full Description

Site of a Culdee chapel, connected with St. Aethans, Burghead. According to Simson (1951) a chapel dedicated to the Virgin Nary was founded before 1222 AD and stood on the farm of Unthank. A late 18th century source records that Unthank hamlet bore the name college and that foundations of the chapel had been recently taken up to repair the mill. OS site visit 1962 recorded that the farmer of Easter Unthank noted that rubble was sometimes turned up in ploughing in the field centred NJ17646720, and the farmer of Wester Unthank reported that there had been an old mill in the area centred NJ16796701.
