Full Description

A possible post-Viking burial was discovered in 1829 by a labourer digging on a moor circa 1 mile from Ballindalloch. The grave contained a human skeleton and the skull and bones of a horse. Along with the skeletal remains were found metal rings, bits of iron, one of which has a large loop and is probably the iron rim of a shield, a bridle bit and what appeared to be a shield boss. The contents are now lost. Although a Norse date for the burial is suggested given the presence of the horse, the bridle bit has also been compared to one from Largs which is of Iron Age date.
