Full Description

Site of flint working area. Described in PSAS 63 (1928-29) as a 'Wide, flat, circular area of sand thickly strewn with sea gravel and pebbles - quartzite, gneiss, porphyritic rock etc. On the surface of this area are strewn a great number of pieces of flint - flakes, fragments and small chips, many of the latter are very small indeed...Towards the South-East end of the area the surface rises into a low mound...at one end of the mound is a harder and darker boss...showing unmistakable signs of fire. There are neither hearthstones, nor any large stones at this spot, only pebbles.'. The report also noted the remains of burnt bones, wood, a copper or bronze fragment and pot fragments, as well as a quantity of periwinkle shells. A report in 1982 stated that in Old Wick Museum is a quantity of this material, recorded as being from a 'flint-workers' site near Findhorn. The collection comprises over 100 fragments of pottery, burnt bone, a tiny fragment of bronze, 300 flints (ranging from two or three recognisable artefacts to tiny chips, a good deal of which is actually worked agate), and two sepia prints of the site. The material also includes identifiable carbon and ash samples.
