Full Description

The old village of Findhorn stood near the mouth of the River Findhorn to the northwest of the present village. It was a busy seaport serving the towns from Inverness to Elgin and was made a Burgh of Barony in 1661. In the last years of the 17th century blown sand gradually choked the River FIndhorn, and the village was destroyed by a great flood on the 11th October 1702 and the area is now under the sea. The exact position was unknown until a number of stones, which appear to be carved, were uncovered at a very low tide in 2002. These are thought to be part of the old town. Many of the buildings on the present village are thought to include masonry recovered from the site of the old village. Survey carried out by T Negus (Findhorn Heritage) in 2003 recorded all the larger masonry on the shingle bank, and the location of moulded masonry. Site visit during very low tide in July 2022 noted some possible masonry.
