Full Description

Site of a bobbin mill depicted on the OS 2nd edition map. Documentary research by J Gilliatt records evidence for the mill from contemporary newspaper reports (1888-1949), letters (1884-6), census and valuation rolls. The Forres and Nairn Gazette in September 1880 reported approval of plans for construction of a bobbin mill by Andrew Taylor. In May 1898 A Taylor sold the mill to his mill manager, Alexander Merchant who ran the mill until his retirement in 1913, when it was taken over by his son, also Alexander Merchant, at which time the mill was still known as Taylor and Co, Bobbin Makers. A photograph of 1921 shows 14 mill workers. There were at least 8 fires at the mill between 1881 and 1949 often destroying the mill buildings and machinery. Anecdotal evidence suggests it was a fire which brought bobbin making here to an end in 1949 or the early 1950s.
