Full Description

Site of a midden, dated to the Late Bronze Age - Iron Age.

The central area of the midden was excavated by James Watston in 1967, and quantities of pottery and animal bones recovered. Between then and 1970 fresh trenches had been cut (by persons unknow) radiating from the central area.

Excavation in 1970 clarified the stratigraphy of the midden and yielded pottery of nameless Flat Rim character, animal bones and shells. The refuse included bones of cattle, sheep, pigs, and a small amount of grain and shellfish were present. Midden 1, which rested on clean wind-blown sand, appears to represent a single phase of occupation, after which the site appears to have been abandoned with accumulaion of windblown sand before a second thinner Midden 2 deposit accumulated. No bone or pottery was recovered from the upper midden. The site was subsequently abandoned.
The pottery and radiocarbon dating evidence indicate Bronze Age use.
