Full Description

Mesolithic flints picked up when field walking by Dr Greive in 1974 (Dr Grieve's Site I). Fieldwalking in March 2019 as part of the Mesolithic Deeside project recovered further 326 lithics, concentrated mostly in the northern part of the field and generally aligned along two palaeochannels running parallel to the river. The field is on the Camphill Terrace. Lithics included flint blades, flakes, cores, microliths and possible scrapers. Most of the cores are single platform cores. The lithics indicate activity in both the Late Mesolithic the Neolithic. A single leaf point and knife firm suggests and Early Neolithic date, bit there are also elements of Late Neolithic flint working, including bipolar cores. One blade of translucent honey coloured flint was notable for the fine quality of the raw material. Microscopic analysis revealed well-developed polishing along the edge, indicating fairly short-term use. The blade is very similar to a Mesolthic example from Star Carr, Yorkshire. See also NO79NW0018 for cropmark in the southwest part of the field.
