Full Description
Mesolithic flints have been found here (known as Dr Grieve's Site G). In total, 26 worked flints were found at this site. The scatter was a very localised surface collection, discovered after ploughing and heavy rain. The flints were donated to Aberdeen Museum. Recent analysis of the collection identified flakes, blades, cores and a single microburin amongst the material. Fieldwalking by Mesolithic Deeside project in early 2020 recorded five flints, including one blade and three flakes. There is also a record of worked flints found on the south bank in 1978 at NO717962, comprising 35 flints including one blade core and two scrapers. Lithics in the Daly Collection, collected in the 1980s and 1990s, were assessed in 2024 as part of the Mesolithic Deeside Project and 36 lithics recorded as 'near Birkwood' as possibly this site.
