Full Description

Burial cairn, in the form of a large turf-covered mound with flat top and a slight depression in centre. A perforated stone, circa 20 mm diameter, of sandstone, was found on its surface, probably broken off a larger artefact, its date and purpose unknown. A study was carried out into the potential impacts on the settings of the cairn by a proposed development of residential property circa 50 m north of the cairn. The proposed development consists of a single dwelling which according to plans will occupy 50 degrees of the total panoramic view from the cairn which constitutes 14 percent of the overall view. The cairn and development will be visible in the same view in some approaches from the north, northeast and west although they will only be directly superimposed when viewed from the north. The study concluded that while there would be some impact on the context in which the cairn is viewed, it is judged that owing to the current condition of the cairn (overgrown with trees and subject to frequent trampling by cattle) the nature and size of the proposed development and the overall proportion of views to and from the cairn in which it will feature, it is judged that the development will not significantly affect the way that the monument is understood in the current landscape.
