Full Description

A considerable number of flints have been found within a 10m radius on the river terrace to the south-southwest of Nether Mills of Drum Farm while field walking over a number of years. Further fieldwalking has been carried out over this river terrace site, in 2010 and 2011 by Prof. Sabnis with help from OFARS and JBK. In 2011 almost 500 flints were collected, the assemblage containing material from all stages of production including scrapers, cores and debitage. Further work was carried out in 2012. The concentration of flints in this field is a continuation of the scatter in the field to the west (see also NO79NE0022). Geophysical, topographical and aerial survey was carried out in 2017 to provide background information about the site. Further flints were recorded by fieldwalking in February 2018 as part of the Mesolithic Deeside Project, including cores, flakes, blades and retouched blades. The spatial distribution of lithics reflects the river terrace stratigraphy, the majority found on the Camphill Terrace, with few from the higher older Maryfield Terrace. Fieldwalking in 2018 also recovered a flint ball, identified as a fossil sponge, from circa NO 75320 96168: although natural this must have been deliberately collected and retained (possibly during the Mesolithic period) as such fossils are not natural to this area.
