Full Description

Late 17th century, semi-circular single and 2-storey crowstepped range of farm offices, built by Sir Robert Gordon, 3rd Baronet of Gordonstoun, mimicking the larger Round Square found on the Gordonstoun estate (NJ16NE0028). Between 1899 – 1901, W. L. Carruthers of Inverness altered the building adding a new house at the east end of the semi-circle and forming what became one of the grandest shooting lodges in Moray. Rubble with tooled and polished ashlar dressings. Centre round-headed archway with 1901 keystone and detailing, to west curved single and 2-storey steading ranges, the end 2-storey block converted as dwelling with modern rear fenestration. At the east the curved range has 1901 dormers breaking wallhead under round-headed gablets, its end south gable projecting through a 2-storey, 9-bay dwelling house clasping it at right angles. Irregular south frontage to 1901 house with varied fenestration and glazing. Crowstepped gables, coped end and ridge, slate roofs. South entrance, probably later 18th century. Pair ashlar gate piers with moulded corniced caps and ball finials on attenuated bases. Pair decorative wrought-iron gates. The lodge was intended to accompany a proposed grand house named ‘Rhininver’, but this house did not materialise. Partly damaged by fire in 1971. A similar semi-circular steading can be found a short distance to the southeast at Cotts of Rhininver (NJ15SW0043).

Period Notes
Listed 26/01/1971. Farm buildings from 17th century with a house added in 1901.
