Full Description

Dallas War memorial, commemorating the soldiers of Dallas parish who died in WW I and II, built by John Wittet in 1919-21. It is a hexagonal columnar monument topped with an ornately carved group of thistles, reminiscent of a crown, resting on a polished triangular pedestal on a stepped base. It was originally topped by a lion, which is now used as a finial on the watch house in the graveyard of St Michael's parish church (NJ15SW0004). The shaft is decorated with carved Empire wreaths on alternate faces. The full transcription of the memorial is held in the AAS Digital Archive. In 2015, a plaque with the name of William Anderson, VC, was added to the memorial. Anderson was awarded a posthumous VC for his action on 12 March 1915. The column was damaged by a storm in 1927 but subsequently restored. A commemorative paving slab has also been laid at the Village Hall (NJ15SW0052). The memorial is enclosed by a low triangular bullfaced rubble wall, and sites at the road junction between the church and the village of Dallas.
