Full Description

Fragment of a Class II cross-slab and a socket stone, recovered from St Ringan's Cairn (NO67NE0014) in 1965 while excavating for road material. The cross-slab is carved in high relief. On one side it has been decorated with a cross as a central motif with decorated panels either side of the cross shaft, although only part of the left hand panel survives. The carving here shows the body and hindquarters of an animal, possibly a boar. The shaft of the cross appears to have a key pattern. The back of the stone has a carved triskele. The surface of the socket stone has small protruding pebbles and hollows left by inclusions that have fallen out. The central rectangular mortise-type slot penetrates the full thickness of the slab and is surrounded by a raised collar. Examination of the cross-slab indicates that it is not the stone that was originally intended to be housed in the socket stone, suggesting they are parts of two separate monuments. The cross-slab and socket stone are both stored in the Marischal Museum, Aberdeen.
