Full Description
Two complete Food Vessels, fragments of a third, and rim fragments of what is probably a Cinerary Urn, all unprovenanced, are in the museum of Hospitalfield House. Food Vessel 1 is 17.27 cm (6.8 inches) in diameter at the rim, 8.89 cm (3.5 ins) at the base and 14.22 cm (5.6 ins) in height. It has light brown fabric with a temper of coarse grit which disrupts the decoration in places. The rim slopes inwards and is decorated with three lines of cord impressions. About 5 cm below the rim there is an uneven carination, about which the decoration continues in a slightly different pattern to the rim. No 2 is 11.68 cm (4.6 ins) in diameter at the rim, 6.85 cm (2.7 ins) at the base and 11.43 cm (4.5 ins) in height. It is made of a yellowish-buff ware of coarse fabric, smoothed with medium grits and has two bands of decoration of vertical whipped cord impressions. No 3, fragmentary and incomplete, is 16.51 cm (6.5 ins) in diameter at the rim, 9.9 cm (3.9 ins) at the base and 11.17 cm (4.4 ins) high (reconstructed). The base is splayed and has a central interior boss. It has a reddish-buff colour, a compact sandy fabric with medium grits, a thickened rim and an inward bevel. It is decorated with chevrons and jabs separated by short horizontal lines. No 4 (Cinerary Urn) is fragmentary, it is 21.59 cm (8.5 ins) in diameter at the rim (reconstructed). It consists of six fragmentary sherds of a black gritty fabric, decorated with circular impressions and two incised horizontal lines, both made with a hollow fibrous implement.
