Full Description

Paddle blade found in a 'lake dwelling' in Loch Kinord - this may refer to the Castle (NO49NW0010) or the crannog (NO49NW0012). Now in Aberdeen University Anthropological Museum. It is in good condition and only slightly split. It measures just over 0.52m in length, of which the near-rectangular section of the blade accounts for 0.22m and the concave shoulders for a further 0.24m. The blade measures about 12mm in thickness and the dorsal surface is very slightly rounded, while the ventral surface is flat and measures up to 0.2m in breadth. The handle is slightly oval in section and measures about 20mm in diameter. It has broken away at a point where a slight tongue of wood protrudes (possibly as part of a socket joint). Radiocarbon dated to 925+/-37 BP (1025 - 1186 cal AD).
