Full Description

Three clay vases/urns were found in this area in 1829, filled with a black 'clammy substance' and ashes in a triangular formation under a flat stone circa 100 yds from the Castle Hill of Rattray. One of the urns was pierced with holes in the side and base. Anderson believes, on the evidence of Early Medieval pictures of funeral rites of that time, that these vases are incense cups full of charcoals, of the period from the 12th-16th centuries. One of the urns and a sketch of the other two were donated to the NMAS. It now would appear that these may in fact be kiln furniture, as pottery kilns have been found nearby.
