Full Description

Lithic scatter recovered during fieldwalking in December 2021 and April 2022 by the Mesolithic Deeside project in 2021 in three grass fields mounded and planted with young trees which provided circa 16 percent of the field as exposed ground. A total of 53 worked lithics found across two of the fields (none were recovered from the southwestern one) represent a broad span of occupation. Mainly of flint they include blades, retouched blades, cores and flakes, and comprised a general scatter rather than any concentrations of lithics. Retouched tools included a knife form, a scraper, a leaf point and an awl. One blade (from the eastern field) is of distinctive grey flint and may date to the Early Mesolithic or earlier. A blade core, blades and a notched blade represent occupation during the Late Mesolithic, a leaf point dates to the Early Neolithic whilst a knife form is a later Neolithic tool type. An unknown number of flints are also noted to have been found sometime prior to 1993.
