Full Description

A fragment of a Pictish stone Class I is built into the garden wall of Birse old manse. This is in the part of the north facing wall, west of the south gateway into the garden. It measures roughly 260 mm by 238 mm and bears the incised symbol of an almost complete double-sided comb, circa 126 mm long by circa 84 mm wide. Immediately adjoining the comb is a curved line which may be part of a mirror. There is also part of a third symbol which survives as a thick, in-curving terminal, which broadens rapidly. This may possibly represent part of a beast's tail, though the thickness may suggest otherwise. It could also represent a decorated corner of a rectangular symbol or the lower edge of a cross.
