Full Description
Remains of a depopulated settlement, including the remains of an old croft house and, on same axis, the footings of a complex longhouse. To the southeast is a fine stell, stone built, heather-capped, with lintelled entry on the south. Other foundations in vicinity suggest a single farm of some time depth. The OS 1st edition map shows three rectangular buildings (roofless), the third building north of the croft house. Recorded by CFA in pre-afforestation survey in 1991. The croft house, 11 m long and 3 m wide, has rough coursed masonry walls up to 2 m high, with a door midway along the east side. The longhouse measures 18 m by 5 m, subdivided by two walls. To the south the circular drystone enclosure (sheepfold) is 11 m in diameter, the walls 1 m thick. To the north (at NJ 19402 50227) is a circular stone enclosure 4m in diameter joined to the southwest by a longhouse 12 m long. and divided into two rooms. The circular structure is suggested to be a corn-drying kiln attached to a storehouse. The remains were also recorded during walkover survey carried out by Liz Jones in June - July 2024 ahead of proposed woodland creation (NJ15SE0079).
