Full Description
Remains of an iron boat, adjacent to the canal. It is double ended with an almost half-round cross-section. The frames are continuous and sit on a rolled iron part-keel. Much of the shell plating has been lost. The boat has been recovered for conservation, and is now in the Garioch Heritage Centre. Assessment has shown that the vessel was built without a keel between the bow and stern frame, providing a rounded bottom, indicating its main purpose as an ice breaker by being rolled from side to side. Of wrought iron, it measures 4.83 m in length and is 1.65 m wide, and was skinned in rivetted iron plate.
