Full Description

Two Early Bronze Age flat axes were found about half way up the north side of the Pass of Ballater, in a scree slope. One lay on top of the other embedded blade-first circa 5cm into the scree. The likelihood is that the find represents a hoard. Whilst it appears likely that this form of flat axe may have been made for several centuries, these axes may have been produced as early as 1700 BC. Axe 1: length 157mm, max breadth of blade 94.5mm, butt 43mm thickness 8.5mm. Axe 2 : length 153mm, max breadth of blade 95mm, butt 37mm, thickness 9mm.
