Full Description
Single flint flake found in July 2017 circa 500 m below White Bridge. Site visit in July 2019 by G. Warren, University of Dublin, examined a band of erosion here (probably resulting from flooding) on the second terrace above the River Dee. A notable charcoal concentration identified in one area of erosion was cleaned and sampled. This recorded a steep sided pit cut into the second terrace, the pit containing well preserved charcoal, with burnt stone (mainly at the top). Two radiocarbon samples from pine charcoal provided an Iron Age date for use of the pit, providing the first archaeological evidence for Iron Age activity in this area of the Cairngorms. No artefacts were uncovered with the charcoal, but the archaeobotanical assemblage from the pit provides evidence for the nature of fuel procurement strategies in this area in the Iron Age.
