Full Description

Quern, comprising both the upper and lower stones of a rotary quern were found 'stuck together with mould', found in topsoil in a JCB trench in 1983. The exterior of the lower stone preserves its natural and original surface. The perforation of this stone tapers markedly towards the inner surface. The actual perforation of the upper surface is less tapered, although it rises through a form of low boss on the outer surface of the stone. The handle hole is located 4 cm from the edge and does taper inwards. The upper stone is 37-38 cm diameter, circa 3 cm thick with a central perforation 4 cm in diameter, and handle perforation 3 cm diameter outside, 1.5cm diameter inside. The lower stone is 41-45 cm diameter, circa 3-5 cm thick, with a central perforation 8cm diameter outside, 3 cm diameter inside.
