Full Description

Two polished stone axes from the collection of the late J Sturrock. One was of flint and polished at the cutting edge, 59mm by 34mm. The other was of polished greenstone, 183mm by 77mm. A further two stone axes from Ellon, were in the collection of John Rae, Aberdeen, which was sold in 1892. Four stone axes in total from Ellon are recorded in the Anthropological Museum, Marischal College, Aberdeen University: (1) of schist, measuring 191mm by 102mm by 30mm, (2) found in 1888, of granite, measuring 286mm by 89mm by 50mm, and purchased from the Wilson Collection in 1908, (3) found in 1880, also of granite, measuring 165mm by 71mm by 40mm, purchased from the Wilson Collection in 1910 along with (4), of diorite, measuring 155mm by 53mm by 33mm. An Axe, of cordierite hornfels, from Ellon, is in the Hunterain Museum, Glasgow (Accession no: B.1914.106).
